General remarks

QBasic may be in for some surprises when launched in "modern" machines. At this moment when I want to run a program on my XP notebook it sends the screen black. I have to make some odd tries (alt-tab-ing to other apps, alt-enter-ing QB to a window, ctrl-break-ing the execution...) until I get my current QB output or editing DOS-screens. Also, it may run more or less smoothly, according to its collaboration with the graphic system I suppose. Eg, the last lines of an image build-up may not show "long enough" before the next image of an animation starts, making part of the figure seem to be lacking, lagging behind, or looking fuzzy through part or all of the animation...
A better solution is, running QB in a "DOS-friendly" environment. This is achieved eg by running DOSBox, from within which QB is then launched, its programs opened and run. Moreover, you can take screenshots (and from them build a pps-show or even a gif animation, see next point). More at

To give some examples of the contents of some of the programs, and perhaps to offer an alternative for the odd poor performance of QB, I have provided for some snapshot and animated images. Again, the animation may run well or less so in your image viewer. Windows pic&fax viewer runs most of them ok, but some will stay planted midways, whereas IE has no problem with them. In my office pc, both applications slow down considerably towards the end of an image cycle. Therefore, in some cases I provide also zip-files with the seperate images, so you can unzip and store them in one directory, from which you can open them in a viewer that allows "running" through them as it were "in real time", yielding the same animation effect, even allowing backward running and standstill (Windows pic&fax does all right here). Occasionally, also a pps-file is provided, for similar purposes.
I started learning Visual Basic or VB. Interrupted again some time ago, but I'd already managed to "transcribe" some programs in this language, and mention them here as well ( .vbp, .vbw, .frm and corresponding .exe files).
An alternative for QB is PowerBasic or PB. Generally it runs faster than QB, but with today's fast machines this may prove a drawback, see before. Often the same bas-code may run in PB, occasionally I've written an adapted PB bas code, in the remaining cases only QB would run the bas file. In the case of Tapistry, it had to be PB only due to a DIM HUGE command unavailable in QB. The program wouldn't even run within PB, but the compiled program runs all right.
Each program below comes with a code zip and a screenshot zip file. The code zip may contain QB and/or PB bas code, the exe compilations (for compiling QB the extended QuickBasic program is needed), and where available VB or Excel versions. The screenshot zip shows some output examples of the program, and occasionally also the intro screens or menus. For some programs other illustratory material is available, which is then pointed to.
