The first five Sikorsky's HSS-1
were delivered from Sud Aviation in 1961 (B4 to B8) to the new heliflight
squadron at Koksijde. Later on another seven helicopters came in from Sabena
(S-58). Two Sikorsky's served within the Royal Belgian Navy. The Sikorsky's
needed some modifications in function of their rescue and transport duties.
During the summer holidays the Sikorsky patrolled along the coastside and
realized many rescue missions. In 1974 the heli-flight was renamed into the 40th
rescue squadron heliflight. The Sikorsky was replaced by the Westland Seaking
in 1976, but remained in service until 1986.
