note 1: in the Po Delta area (N. Italy) from 1990-1994 the used codes are from A02 till Y99 (project by R. Santolini, total ringed 664 ringed pulli). Details : A02-B06 , 1990 ; B07-B78 and C01-C99 , 1991 ; B80-B99 and S01-S99 , 1992 ; H00-H99 and X02-X99 , 1993 ; X01-X98 and Y01-Y99 , 1994. Pay attention , rings starting with X and Y can be very easily misread.
note 2: in the Margherita di Savoia salines (S. Italy) the
used codes are:
IAAA-IABH (1195, 22 pulli) , IABS-IADK (1996, 34 pulli) , IADL-IBCS

note 2: in 1994 296 rings have been used in Ukraine (in collaboration with Antonina Rudenko & Tatjana Ardamatskaya).
note 3: from 1997 on, black rings have been used in Greece (in collaboration with Vassilis Goutner) and Turkey (in collaboration Suhendan Karauz).
note 4: from 1998 onwards, black rings have been used in Ukraine (in collaboration with Antonina Rudenko (Black Sea Biosphere Reserve), Valery Siokhin and Alexander Matsyura (Sivash).
note 5: due to bad meteorological conditions, all Med. Gull colonies of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve have been destroyed; hence no colour-ringing has been performed in 2001 in Ukraine. Other reasons prevented Med. Gulls from being colour-ringed in Turkey and Greece in 2001. New colour-ringing activities are planned in these countries in 2002.

Breeding season 2000:
Saline di Commacchio (Ferrara province): ca. 35 chicks ringed in June by Magnani, Arveda and Bacetti. This was the entire chick production of this small colony.
Southern part of Commacchio lagoon (Ravenna province) : ca. 120 chicks ringed by Talamelli, Arveda and Melega in June. This was only a part of the chick production of the Lavadena colony, which was just one of several colonies existing in the Comacchio Lagoon this year.
Saline di Cervia (Ravenna province) : 128 chicks were ringed on the 20th of July by Magnani. These represented ca. one third of the chick production of a new colony of more than 600 pairs which settled very late in the season, after failing at Pialassa Baiona. Chicks from another small colony settled at this site in normal time, on the dike where an immense colony bred in 1998, were not ringed.
Margherita di Savoia (South Italy) : no ringing again for the third consecutive year. None of the few pairs which attempted breeding there, inside large Slender-billed Gull colonies, was successful.

Ringing details of white-ringed Mediterranean Gulls - The Netherlands / Belgium -
In the period 1990-97 some 960 rings have been used in The
Netherlands (coordination Peter Meininger) and Belgium (coordination
Renaud Flamant).
In 1997 250 new white rings were used. By May 1997, the percentage
of recovery of the birds colour-ringed up to 1996 was 44% for
the birds ringed as chicks and 77% for those ringed as adults.
1996 was a very good breeding season in The Netherlands and Belgium
and resulted in an unprecedented number of colour ringed pulli
and breeding birds. Spring '96, 140 pulli were colour-ringed in
the Netherlands, 71 pulli and 45 breeding birds in Belgium, which
boosts the total of white colour ringed Mediterranean Gulls up
to 751 birds.
At that moment, the percentage recovery of the birds colour-ringed up to 1995 is 50% for the pulli and 82% for the birds ringed as adult or second year breeder.
Most sightings have been made in the area of Boulogne (Pas-de-Calais,
France), where the 'observation pressure' is very high compared
to most other locations sending reports. We believe that there
are many places where the number of colour ringed birds are under-estimated
or unknown and that these sites are not searched thoroughly at
the moment.
All white colourringed Mediterranean Gulls, ringed in Belgium
and The Netherlands, wear an official metal ring (Vogeltrekstation
Arnhem or Bruxelles) and a white colourring with black engraved
code (except two birds without metal ring).
In spring '96, 140 pulli were colourringed in The Netherlands
and 71 pulli and 45 breeding birds in Belgium. This boosts the
total of white colourringed Med. Gulls up to 751 birds.
There are two types of colourrings:
- a code consisting of two digits followed by one letter.
The code is vertically engraved, three times around the ring and
has to be read downwards. This type has been put on the birds
from 1990 up to '96.
- a code consisting of a fixed letter "E" and two digits
followed by one letter.
The letter "E" is engraved one time horizontally; the
two digits and one letter are engraved vertically. The code has
to be read upwards. Due to the fixed letter "E", the
vertical engraving is put two instead of three times. This type
has been put on the birds from 1996. (some confusing letters like
X,Y and V have been used; read exact please ! )
Birds colourringed as pullus have the white colourring on the left tarsus (except 4 birds). Birds ringed as breeding bird in the colony have the white colourring on the right tarsus. All birds have their metal ring on the opposite leg, tarsus or tibia, with exception of all the birds wearing a colourring of the "Y"-series. The birds of the "Y"-series have the metal ring on the tibia of the leg with colourring. This was especially done to exclude incorrect readings between the "Y" and the "V"-series. It is therefore very important to determinate on which leg/tarsus/tibia the metal ring and the colourring are situated.
After the 450 pairs in 1999, Belgium hosted a more reasonable population of around 183 pairs ( 90 Zeebrugge, 18 Sint Kruis Winkel (near Gent) , 28 Zwijndrecht (near Antwerpen) , 8 Zandvlietsluis (near Antwerpen) , 12 Lillo Hoge Maaey (near Antwerpen) , 18 Kieldrecht (near Antwerpen) , 9 Kwaadmechelen (Limburg).
Ringing results are as follows (approx.) : chicks with only a metal ring : +/-150 ; chicks with a white ring : 21 ; chicks with a green ring : 30 ; breeding birds with a white ring : 29 ; breeding birds with a green ring : 56 ; birds captured outside colonies : white 5, green 13.
Thus around 300 birds left Belgium with a new metal ring,
half of them have been colour-ringed. Mainly due to the bad meteorological
situation, few chicks -51- could be colour-ringed. You'll notice
that, whenever possible, the metal ring was in steel and put below
the knee to make metal-ring-reeding easier.

Mediterranean Gull newsletter December '99.
As you will notice in the table lots of Med Gulls have been colour-ringed in 1999, waiting for you and your telescope, proudly showing their brand new ring : 1217 black, 301 dark blue, 279 white, 128 red, 65 green and 12 yellow rings! What are you waiting for? As it has been done in the past, we ask for your collaboration. Could you please keep a very sharp lookout for colour-ringed Mediterranean Gulls ? May we ask you to write down as many details as possible when reading a ring : date, place with geographical coordinates, age, position of rings (colour AND metal ring, left, right, tibia, tarsus, code read up- or downwards), name and address (including e-mail) of the observers and all other interesting information. Details on the types of rings used by the different projects can be found on the enclosed fact-sheet. All sightings will be returned with a life history of the bird, giving the ringing data and all other sightings.
We thank you for all the past and future efforts in the search of these birds. With kind regards, on behalf of all the Mediterranean Gull colour-ringing coordinators,
Renaud FLAMANT, 23 rue de l'Orme / Olmstraat, B-1040 Brussels,

MEDITERRANEAN GULL Larus melanocephalus INFORMATION 1999

Here follows a small report of the Mediterranean Gull colour ringing season in Greece, Turkey and Ukraine (black rings).
The following numbers have been colour ringed :
- Ukraine : 566 chicks, 91 breeding birds ; Turkey : 77 chicks ; Greece : 148 chicks
Possibly, some more birds have been ringed in the Azov Sea. All birds are wearing a metal ring and a black colour ring with a code consisting of three alphanumerical symbols. This year, the combination 'letter-cipher-letter' has been used too.
Including the year 2000 season, a total amount of 3145 black rings has been placed (UKR : 2245; TU : 488; GR : 412).
For all birdwatchers active on the Mediterranean coast (especially Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, France Morocco and Tunesia), may I ask you to keep a very sharp lookout on colour ringed Med Gulls. If you find big Med Gull concentrations somewhere, or even if you see colour ringed birds which could not be read, please report it. Very very few sightings come from the Mediterranean coast, except from the north of Italy. Keep it mind if you live there, or if you're on holiday there!
contact me by mail , all sightings of black rings have to be sent to me : Renaud.Flamant@skynet.be

Flamant@skynet.be
