Steve Bacher
I'm the author of the NNMVS newsreader for MVS/TSO and the MVS Gopher client (I also maintain the MVS Gopher server). I also wrote various assembler routines to make TSO/REXX more compatible with TSO/CLIST, and spent lots of time in my system programmer youth writing tools to make my job easier.
I also was the creator of Zil, an industrial-strength Lisp compiler/interpreter for MVS, and ported the Macsyma symbolic algebra program to MVS under it. At the time it was the fastest known implementation of Macsyma, due to the hardware; now, of course, a common desktop PC could beat it. How time flies (like an arrow, naturally).

My only contribution as a recruiter will be to serve your readers when, like now, I am working a mainframe oriented position. For those with long memories, I did help make the Hydra II channel attached protocol converter a viable counterpart to IBM's 7171 and the SDLC attached 3708.

Norberto Bocalandro new 28/11/03
I work for IBM (Martinez Plant) since 1980, in Test Engineering, soon in Information System. I've always been dedicated to control process (even before the 80), at that time with microprocessors, and soon after with systems like the Sistema/7, or Series-1 soon to happen to use one 360-145, one 4341, another 4381, the first 3090 of Argentina, and always fighting with the hardware and software. I left IBM in 1994 in order to dedicate myself entirely to software, offering services as much of installation, as of maintenance and something that gets passionate to me which is the dictation of courses on VM, MVS, OS/390 and now z/OS with educative dealer of IBM. A lot of people know me, and remember me (I hope in good terms), and for that reason I desire your approbation and by mainly the COLLABORATION of all you in my site, Dino Land - Tierra de Dinosaurios (site with forums, bulletins and links on mainframes, with zOS, z/VM, OS/390, Linux, and products as RACF, COBOL, JCL, TSO, CICS, DB2, etc. Also hardware and products comparation).

Gabriel Goldberg
I'm Gabe Goldberg, a consultant, writer, and editor. I've worked with IBM mainframe systems throughout my career, have co-edited several technical McGraw-Hill books on Rexx and VM/ESA, and have written for various trade publications. I've also been active in the mainframe user group community. I'm now taking on responsibility for editing an IBM magazine which targets the VSE and VM communities. You may have seen the first issue, titled "S/390 Business Solutions Journal", published last spring. As of the second issue, just released, the title changed to "S/390 VM and VSE Solutions Journal".
The magazine describes business success stories enabled by S/390 equipment -- VM and VSE systems in particular. Customer profile stories and application descriptions will be written from business perspectives, rather than emphasizing technical details. The magazine will help readers understand and apply benefits of VM, VSE, and related products, provide insights into building business justifications for using or upgrading mainframes, illustrate how diverse organizations in diverse industries use mainframes for mission-critical strategic applications, and encourage use of real-world return-on-investment measures for planning and implementing systems. I've included below some guidelines for selecting sites and shaping profiles.
I'm writing to inquire whether organizations will consider participating in this magazine, perhaps allowing a corporate/application profile to be written describing use of VM and/or VSE systems and applications. If you volunteer, as we establish the process and schedule for creating and editing the magazine, I'll inquire about how you use VSE and/or VM, will seek relevant infiormation such as annual reports or Web site pointers, and will provide details on how the collaboration will proceed. I'll write many profiles, and also will negotiate with others to write them. Sites will be chosen to represent diverse geography, applications, business processes, and industry sectors. Please let me know if you're interested in joining, and whether I can provide additional information on this effort. Thanks...
    Highlight
  • Customer profiles -- line(s) of business, applications, people
  • VM and/or VSE systems
  • Business success, return on investment
  • Executive use and support
  • Interesting technologies but only secondary to business issues
  • Current applications used
  • IBM processors only
  • Hardware/software conversions/upgrades
  • Diverse industries
  • Diverse geography
  • Interfaces to networks and systems
  • Independent Software Vendor products installed

I have been a developer of ISPF for about 15 years and have, for the last couple of years, also done Level 2 & 3 work (Tech support & fixes). Some of the work I've done included edit highlight, relaxing the 255 byte restrictions in edit, edit COMPARE, various edit work, ISRDDN, many service aids (ISPVCALL, etc.) as well as little things all over the place. Having said all that, let me emphasize that these programs are not specifically endorsed by nor supported by IBM. Support for them is on my own time.

Bob Richards (United States) new 06/04/04
I have twenty-five plus years of experience in MVS, OS/390 and z/OS Systems Programming. I am very experienced with DFSMS issues and other areas of Storage Management. I work on and off in areas such as Performance Tuning, Capacity Planning, Data Center Consolidation and Project Management. Most of my experience is on very large IBM mainframes (the latest are three z990s). In the last seven years, I did four different OS/390 releases and have set up multiple parallel sysplex environments. I am presently working on a GDPS/XRC project between two datacenters about 500 miles apart. In the past, I consolidated lots of disparate SMS environments into single SMSPLEXes. I was highly successful doing two years of marketing for IBM's S/390 Division in the mid '90s. I enjoy coding REXX, contributing to IBM-Main and a host of other sites, playing with Hercules and selling the idea around here about running production work on Linux under z/VM on S/390!

I am an OS/390 Systems Programmer with approximately 20 years experince. I started in the Marine Corps as an EDL programmer for the Series I, then moved on to COBOL and Natural (Software AG) programming. I then moved on to become a Data Base Manager, then a Data Base Administrator (ADABAS). When discharged I became an ADABAS DBA/MVS Systems Programmer. I am now on OS/390 having helped migrate my current employer from VES/ESA to OS/390 r3 (and all the other things that entails), then upgraded them to r6, and am now getting them upgraded to r10.

I have performed Multi-month contracts for IBM to work in the design & development teams for MVS/ESA V3, V4 & V5 as well as OS/390 R1,2,3,4, & V2.5, CICS/ESA V3 & V4, IMS/ESA V4 &V5 and the last 4 Versions of DB/2, as well as contracts for both Hitachi and Amdahl to ensure that the newest releases of MVS/ESA and other supporting products will run efficiently on their respective processors. I am past actively involved with the IBM Vendor support and Early Ship Programs for these products. I have developed hundreds of performance and testing routines and enhancements for MVS/ESA, some of which are included with OS/390 and the MVS/ESA Version 5 operating system and some are only available internally from IBM or on the various MVS "share" tapes. I have also provided IBM Level 2 support for DFSMS (this includes the HSM, TMM and ABARS queues) and the ACF/VTAM and NCP queues.
I have completed 41 Data center migrations (22 SMS sites and 19 non SMS sites) over the last 6 years. Some of the sites requested the implementation of SMS prior to the consolidation which was performed as requested, all sites required ACF/VTAM, SNA, NCP Networking Support and either CICS or IMS, 17 sites required DB/2. I have been a consultant to IBM's Professional Services Division in matters of customer installation or problems with MVS/ESA, CICS/ESA, DB/2, IMS, DFSMS, HSM, TMM, and ABARS for the past 4 years. I worked as the design and development team for Landmark Systems Corporation's TMON for CICS/ESA prototype which was eventually implemented with very few changes as TMON/CICS-ESA Version 9. Many of the ESA specific facilities and routines developed by him during that project were also implemented into the company's TMON for MVS product.

My goals for this year include doing more with HTML, CGI Scripts, and JAVA Script to further my own personal goals. I am still convinced that MVS is the way to go no matter what the pundits say. Hi to all. I am a new Zealander by birth. I am currently UK (England) based where I have been carrying out contract work for various large financial institutions for the last five years. I am a specialist in the mainframe storage management arena, but am currently trying to break into the SANs & NAS technolgies as that seems to be the direction for the forseeable future. My recent work has been predominantly involving data centre moves and consolidation, disaster recovery (including large extended channel networks and XRC), DFSMS configuration and tuning and DASD storage performance and tuning. I have worked extensively with ICF catalogs, DFHSM and other OEM storage products over the years. I have a broad knowledge of OS390 but am obviously still learning. I would like to expand my knowledge of Unix System Services and Sysplex management.
