Patrick Newell biografie Patrick David Newell werd geboren in Hadleigh, Suffolk op 27 maart 1932. Hij stierf in 1988 ten gevolge van een hartaanval. Opleiding Hij volgde een opleiding aan de Taunton School waarna hij zich inschreef in de 'Royal Academy of Dramatic Art' (RADA). Hij realiseerde hij zich dat het talent van zijn collega-studenten, waaronder Albert Finney en Peter O'Toole, het zijne ver overtrof. Om zich te vestigen als niche acteur begon hij bewust gewicht aan te winnen. Vroege carrière Na zijn legerdienst was hij regelmatig te zien op TV in dramatische en komische rollen, waaronder 'Walk A Crooked Mile' (1961), 'The Long Spoon' (1961) en 'The Liars' (1961). Hij speelde een Griek in 'The Sentimental Agent' (1962), vertolkte een rol in 'Danger Man' (1964), was een deurwaarder in de kinderserie 'Smugglers Bay' (1964) en was te zien in de minder bekende series 'The Old Lag' (1964), 'The Idiot' (1966) en 'Hole in the Road' (1967). Zijn eerste kleine filmrol speelde hij in 'Dial 999' (1955). Hierna volgden 'The Rebel' (1960), 'Never Mention Murder' (1964) en 'Danny The Dragon' (1966). De Wrekers - The Avengers In 1965 en 1967 vertolkte hij een rol in de Wrekersafleveringen: 'The Town of No Return' en 'Something Nasty in the Nursery'. In de Tara King reeks kreeg hij een vaste rol als Mother, een van de betere stappen in zijn carrière. Latere carrière In de jaren zeventig volgde hij een streng dieet met als gevolg dat hij steeds minder werk kreeg aangeboden. Newell beschreef zichzelf als: "Actor with a weight problem--the more he diets, the less work he seems to get." Latere rollen waren onder meer: Mr. Oliphant in 'Never Say Die' (1970), Stanley Allenby-Johnson in 'The Misfit' (1970-71), Schalon in 'Casanova' (1971), Colonel Faraday in 'Doctor Who, The Android Invasion' (1975), Sir Edmund Weir in 'Man About The House' (1974), Inspector Lestrade in 'Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson' (1980), 'Doctors' Daughters' (ATV, 1981), Mr. Horsley in 'Kinvig' (1981), King in 'The Young Ones' (1982-84), Mr. Dawson in 'Bottle Boys' (1984-85), Mr. Blessington in 'The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes' (1985), Maxwell in 'Ladies in Charge' (1986) en Frank Goldman in 'Casualty' (1987).  Zijn laatste rol was Lester in 'Consuming Passions' in 1988. Privé leven Patrick Newell was gehuwd met Derina Newell en had twee kinderen.
