| The Very First One | ||
![]() | The picture on the left shows the very first chip cottage at the Stationsplein, Aalst. There still is a chips shop until this very day. Right: Chips shop Verbeeck anno 1930. |

| The Chips Shed | ||
![]() | This manner of running a chips shop dates from the very beginning, when people tried to earn lots of money without any planning. The chip shops were built according to the Òcreativity and inventivenessÒ of the shopkeeper. They were made of ply-board, corrugated iron and formica, and they were slightly painted. Hygiene was hardly heard of. | ![]() |
| The Chip Bus | ||
![]() | Later on some would-be shop owners started refitting existing 'structures' such as busses into chip shops. You'll find most of them in Wallonie and the Nord of France, but also some in the Flanders. Even though they are very ugly, to some people they prove to be irresistible. |

| The Caravan Type | ||
![]() | This type has a lot in common with the chip bus. Obviously it's much smaller in size and can also be made from a delivery van. When the van becomes too small they build extensions, but it gets easily rusty and mouldy. | ![]() |
| The Chalet | ||
![]() | This looks already a lot better; hanging flowerpots, chequered curtains and sometimes wrought-iron lanterns. The chalet also looks appealing and clean. The business name is mostly lighted up in neon lights. There is also a variant called the rough chalet, not nicely painted but covered in rough black tarry planks. | ![]() |
| The Chip Wagon - Old Type | ||
![]() | When after World War II chip shops received their own fixed stand place, many of them were placed on blocks and shielded against cold and wind. When they were replaced, one tried to keep the old atmosphere by giving them a retro look. They were made by specialist firms. One has to look very carefully not to confuse them with a shed or caravan type chip shop. | ![]() |
| De Chip Shop Annex | ||
![]() | This type is connected to a main building by one wall. Often a combination is made with another horeca business, which means that often no-one is there to serve you. Not very much liked by connoisseurs. | ![]() |
| The Home Chips Shop | ||
![]() | At the moment very much in fashion, they appear in all forms and formats. For example: takeaway chips only, eat-in places only, or a combination of the two. Some are real jewels, designed by well-known interior decorators. The menu card is very extensive and consists of diverse snacks and a variety of courses. | ![]() |
| The Chip Wagon - New Type | ||
| These are the newest types comformably to all hygienic standards,some are build to town-planners rules | . |
